Facing Mutsu Bay on the northernmost tip of Honshu, Aomori is a bustling regional capital known for its fresh seafood and modern architecture.
Get some historical perspective at Sannai-Maruyama Site and Aomori Suwa Shrine. Step out of the city life by going to Oirase Mountain Stream and Tashirotai Heights. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Aomori: Tsugaru Earth Vellage (in Tsugaru), Senjyojiki Beach (in Fukaura-machi) and Towada (Choshi Otaki Waterfall, Kudan no Taki Waterfall, &more). There's lots more to do: admire the masterpieces at Aomori Museum of Art, examine the collection at Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Hakkodamaru, admire the landmark architecture of Aomori Prefecture Tourist Centerl ASPAM, and get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Aomori Asamushi Aquarium.

If you are flying in from New Zealand, the closest major aiport is Hakodate Airport. In August in Aomori, expect temperatures between 30°C during the day and 22°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 30th (Sun) to allow time to travel back home.
