You might consider the city of Budapest, divided by the Danube River into two distinctive cities--Buda and Pest--to be essentially one large World Heritage Site.
Get a sense of the local culture at Matthias Church and St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent Istvan Bazilika). Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Halaszbastya and Hősök tere. Step out of Budapest to go to Esztergom and see Esztergom Basilica / Cathedral, which is approximately 1h 10 min away. There's lots more to do: examine the collection at House of Terror Museum, explore the historical opulence of Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyadvar), indulge your senses at some of the top wineries in the area, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Dohány Street Synagogue.
