Surrounded by lakes and featuring impressive areas of geothermal landscape, the city of Rotorua offers an otherwordly landscape and a welcoming, peaceful environment, with the culture of the native Maori people very much in the foreground.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Mt Maunganui Main Beach and Volcanic Hills Winery. Get a sense of the local culture at Eat Street and Ohinemutu. Change things up with these side-trips from Rotorua: Papamoa Beach (in Papamoa) and the Zeus Gallery (in Tauranga). There's still lots to do: get impressive views of Waimangu Volcanic Valley, take in the natural beauty of Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave, relax and rejuvenate at some of the best spas, and look for all kinds of wild species at Redwoods Treewalk.

Enjoy the atmosphere and architecture of 1930s design in Napier, one of the best-preserved Art Deco cities in the world.
Explore hidden gems such as Marine Parade and Bluff Hill Lookout. Wine Tours & Tastings and Mission Estate Winery are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Change things up with a short trip to Te Mata Peak in Hastings (about 32 minutes away). Situated on the shores of Lake Wanaka in the Otago region, Wanaka has become a popular ski and summer resort area, owing to its extensive views of the lake and its proximity to some of the best slopes in the country.
