The castle around which the city of Himeji has developed represents one of the best preserved in the country, and has been designated as a national treasure and a World Heritage Site.
Venture out of the city with trips to Daisen Outlook (in Mimasaka), Mt. Kuma (in Bizen) and Okayama Korakuen Garden (in Okayama). There's still lots to do: step into the grandiose world of Himeji Castle, take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. Takamikura, take in nature's colorful creations at Koko-en Garden, and don't miss a visit to Shoshazan Engyoji.

You can take a train from Himeji to Kyoto in an hour. Other options are to drive; or take a bus. In December in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 13°C during the day and 4°C at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 1st (Wed) so you can catch the train to Kanazawa.
