Nantou

Nantou provides good access to the cultural and natural sites of the surrounding county of the same name.
Explore Nantou's surroundings by going to Qingshui (Gaomei Wetland & Dakeng No. 9 Trail) and Zhangliancang Saxophone Memorial Hall (in Houli). On the 18th (Tue), dedicate a day to the elevated beauty of Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area. There's still lots to do: explore the activities along Sun Moon Lake, relax in the rural setting at Cingjing Veterans Farm, take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Jinlong Mountain, and steep yourself in history at Wenwu Temple.

Traveling by combination of train and bus from Hualien to Nantou takes 5.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive. In May, plan for daily highs up to 34°C, and evening lows to 26°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 20th (Thu) early enough to drive to Alishan.
