Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Graham's Port Lodge and O Navio Gil Eannes are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Visit Se de Braga and Convento de Cristo for their historical value. Change things up with these side-trips from Porto: Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima (in Fatima), Centro Historico de Guimaraes (in Guimaraes) and Bom Jesus do Monte (in Braga). There's lots more to do: learn about winemaking at Taylor's Port, take a stroll around Palacio da Bolsa, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Santuario de Santa Luzia.

As the busy capital of São Miguel, Ponta Delgada represents the most visited place on the island. Known for its historical buildings, the city offers 17th- and 18th-century convents and churches, as well as cobbled pedestrian streets and hidden squares.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Lagoa do Fogo and Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Centre. Head to Azorean Gift Shop and Mercado da Gracafor plenty of shopping. Get out of town with these interesting Ponta Delgada side-trips: Sao Nicolau Church (in Sete Cidades) and Furnas (Caldeiras Vulcânicas, Parque Terra Nostra, &more). There's still lots to do: contemplate the waterfront views at Furnas, get engrossed in the history at Vila Franca Museum, take in the awesome beauty at Viewpoint of the Ridge, and examine the collection at Colecao Visitavel Matriz de Lagoa.
