First Akmola, then Tselinograd, and now Astana: the city's latest name means "capital," something Astana became in 1998.
Step off the beaten path and head to Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve and City Park. Change things up with a short trip to Alzhir, Memorial Museum of Victims of Political Repressions and Totalitarianism in Malinovka (about 46 minutes away). The adventure continues: pause for some serene contemplation at Nur-Astana Mosque, cool off at Family Rest Center Ailand, take in the pleasant sights at Nurzhol Boulevard, and browse the different shops at MEGA Silk Way.

Drive from Borovoe to Nur-Sultan in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train. In July, daily temperatures in Nur-Sultan can reach 30°C, while at night they dip to 16°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 19th (Sun) to allow time to drive to Karaganda.

Lying in the heart of Kazakhstan, Karaganda stands as the capital of its region in a vast landscape of unpopulated steppe.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Fatima and Karaganda Regional Museum. Step out of the city life by going to Qarqaraly National Park and Bektau-Ata Mountain Area. When in Karaganda, make a side trip to see City Park of Culture and Leisure in Temirtau, approximately Temirtau away. There's still lots to do: pause for some photo ops at Independence Stele, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Holy Cross Church, see the interesting displays at KarLag / Museum of Political Repression Victims’ Memory of the Dolinka Settlement, and don't miss a visit to Bala Kazhi Mosque # 2.

Traveling by car from Nur-Sultan to Karaganda takes 3 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Expect little chillier evenings in Karaganda when traveling from Nur-Sultan in July, with lows around 12°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 24th (Fri) to allow enough time to travel to Saty.
