First Akmola, then Tselinograd, and now Astana: the city's latest name means "capital," something Astana became in 1998.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Nur-Astana Mosque and Assumption Cathedral. Step off the beaten path and head to City Park and Nurzhol Boulevard. When in Nur-Sultan, make a side trip to see Alzhir, Memorial Museum of Victims of Political Repressions and Totalitarianism in Malinovka, approximately Malinovka away.
