The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Discover out-of-the-way places like Miyajidake Shrine and Fukuoka City Museum. Get some cultural insight at Nanzoin and Munakata Shrine. Explore Fukuoka's surroundings by going to Yoshinogari Historical Park (in Yoshinogari-cho) and Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History (in Kitakyushu). Hidden high up in the Japanese Alps, Takayama remained largely cut off from the rest of Japan for centuries, allowing the local culture to grow in relative isolation.
Get a sense of the local culture at Takayama Showa Museum and Takayama Jinya. Take a break from the city and head to Pond Tashiro and Hida Great Limestone Cave and Ohashi Collection Kan Museum. Step out of Takayama to go to Shirakawa-mura and see Shirakawago, which is approximately 1h 5 min away.
