A modern, bustling city known for its beer brewery, Sapporo attracts millions of visitors with its Snow Festival, during which elaborate ice and snow sculptures are exhibited all over town.
Fushimi Inari Shrine and Sapporo Clock Tower will appeal to history buffs. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like The Hokkaido University Museum and Sapporo Art Museum. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Sapporo: Ransima Beach (in Otaru) and Tomakomai (Furusato Beach & Lake Utonai Wildlife Conservation Center). There's still lots to do: get engrossed in the history at Historical Village of Hokkaido (Kaitaku-no Mura), soak in some Japanese tradition at some of the top local onsens, and get into the urban bustle at Sapporo Underground Shopping Centre Aurora Town.

Museum-lovers will appreciate Shirone Kite Museum and Niigata Niitsu Railway Museum. Discover out-of-the-way places like Yahiko Shrine and Ponshukan Niigata Station. Venture out of the city with trips to Shibata (Ichishimatei & Akatani Cycling Road). The adventure continues: kick back and relax at Nishikaigan Park, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Catholic Niigata Church, take an in-depth tour of Niigata Prefectural Government Memorial Hall, and get outside with Sekiyahama Beach.

You can fly from Sapporo to Niigata in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or do a combination of bus and train. Traveling from Sapporo in August, expect nights in Niigata to be about the same, around 28°C, while days are somewhat warmer, around 34°C.
