Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Step out of Ishigaki to go to Iriomote-jima and see Canyoning & Rappelling Tours, which is approximately 1h 55 min away. There's much more to do: explore the activities along Kabira Bay, stroll around Kabira Park, enjoy the sand and surf at Yonehara Beach, and go for a walk through Cape Ongazaki.

The castle around which the city of Himeji has developed represents one of the best preserved in the country, and has been designated as a national treasure and a World Heritage Site.
Change things up with these side-trips from Himeji: Mt. Kuma (in Bizen), Kunimi no Mori Park (in Shiso) and Daisen Outlook (in Mimasaka).
