The capital of the island of Funen, Odense represents the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, who penned such classics as "The Little Mermaid" and "The Ugly Duckling." Denmark's third-largest city proudly displays its link to the famous writer with museums, sculptures, and public art installations dedicated to Andersen and his stories.
Step off the beaten path and head to Johannes Larsen Museet and Trapholt. Venture out of the city with trips to Koldinghus (in Kolding), Storebælt (in Korsoer) and Museum Langelandsfort (in Langeland). There's lots more to do: get engrossed in the history at The Danish Railway Museum, get to know the resident critters at Odense ZOO, and see the interesting displays at The Funen Village.

Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Musikhuset Aarhus and Botanical Garden and the Greenhouses. Explore Aarhus' surroundings by going to Jelling Mounds, Runic Stones and Church (in Jelling), Randers Regnskov (in Randers) and Skovby Kirke (in Skovby).
