The capital of the island of Funen, Odense represents the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, who penned such classics as "The Little Mermaid" and "The Ugly Duckling." Denmark's third-largest city proudly displays its link to the famous writer with museums, sculptures, and public art installations dedicated to Andersen and his stories.

Step off the beaten path and head to Johannes Larsen Museet and Trapholt. Venture out of the city with trips to Koldinghus (in Kolding), Storebælt (in Korsoer) and Museum Langelandsfort (in Langeland). Located on the sea, Aarhus blends a world city with a small-town feel. Home to a young population, the city has a reputation for producing internationally known pop and rock musicians.

Aalborg, is Denmark's fourth biggest city with an urban population of 136.000 (including 22.000 in the twin city Nørresundby 600 meters across the Limfjorden. Start off your visit on the 22nd (Sun): learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at Aalborg Zoologiske Have, then kick back and relax at Lokken Beach, and then enjoy the sea views from Rubjerg Knude. Skagen is Denmark's northernmost town and the area surrounding it. You'll discover tucked-away gems like Escape Denmark and Bangsbo Fort Bunkermuseum. Go for a jaunt from Skagen to Hirtshals to see Hirtshals Fyr about 46 minutes away.
