For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to La Chiva and Secret Beach. There's much more to do: enjoy the sand and surf at Caracas Beach, glide peacefully along the water with some of the best stand-up paddleboarding in the area, take a leisurely stroll along Mosquito Pier, and head off the coast to Vieques Island.

Traveling by combination of flight and car from Culebra to Isla de Vieques takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can ride a ferry. In January, plan for daily highs up to 32°C, and evening lows to 26°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 31st (Fri) so you can travel to El Yunque National Forest.

A seaside playground in the Caribbean, Rincon was a small agricultural and fishing town until it hosted the 1968 World Surfing Championship.

Ponce is both a city and a municipality in the southern part of Puerto Rico. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Sandra Farms Coffee and River Rafting & Tubing. When in Ponce, make a side trip to see Guanica Dry Forest in Guanica, approximately 44 minutes away.
