Russia's political, economic, and cultural center, Moscow remains the most populous inland city in the world, famed for its colorful history and rich architectural heritage.

The heart of Tatar culture, Kazan carries the epithet of the "Third Capital of Russia" because of its rich history and thriving economy.
Venture out of the city with trips to Raifa (Belfry With The Church in Honor of Archangel Michael & Raifa Monastery). And it doesn't end there: examine the collection at Kazan Kremlin, admire the local landmark of Fountains Cascade, let the kids burn off some steam at Lyadskoi Garden, and stroll around Aksenova Square.

Fly from Moscow to Kazan in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or drive. In July, daytime highs in Kazan are 29°C, while nighttime lows are 17°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 8th (Sun) so you can fly to St. Petersburg.

Built on a desolate swamp as a showcase capital of Imperial Russia, this grand city has certainly lived up to the expectations of its founder, Tsar Peter the Great.
Pack the 16th (Mon) with family-friendly diversions at Divo Ostrov. There's much more to do: admire the masterpieces at The State Hermitage Museum, pause for some serene contemplation at Saint Isaac's Cathedral, steep yourself in history at Palace Square, and admire the striking features of Grand Peterhof Palace and Gardens.

Getting from Kazan to St. Petersburg by flight takes about 4 hours. Other options: drive; or take a train. When traveling from Kazan in August, plan for a bit cooler days and about the same nights in St. Petersburg: temperatures range from 25°C by day to 15°C at night. On the 18th (Wed), you'll have the morning to explore before heading back home.
