The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Venture out of the city with trips to Dazaifu (Dazaifu Temmangu & Komyozen-ji Temple), Nagasaki (Nagasaki Peace Park, Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, & more) and Huis Ten Bosch (in Sasebo). There's much more to do: get to know the fascinating history of Kumamoto Castle, walk around Ohori Park, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kushida Shrine, and take in the dramatic natural features at Chimachibo Park.

Sapporo

A modern, bustling city known for its beer brewery, Sapporo attracts millions of visitors with its Snow Festival, during which elaborate ice and snow sculptures are exhibited all over town.
Change things up with these side-trips from Sapporo: Noboribetsu (Jigokudani & Noboribetsu Date Historic Village) and Otaru Canal (in Otaru). There's still lots to do: walk around Odori Park, don't miss a visit to Former Hokkaido Government Office Building, contemplate the long history of Sapporo Clock Tower, and get engrossed in the history at Historical Village of Hokkaido (Kaitaku-no Mura).

You can fly from Fukuoka to Sapporo in 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or do a combination of car and ferry. Traveling from Fukuoka in April, you will find days in Sapporo are colder (9°C), and nights are little chillier (7°C). Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Fri) so you can drive to Kutchan-cho.

Kutchan-cho's reputation rests on two things: skiing and potatoes.
Kick off your visit on the 11th (Sat): look for all kinds of wild species at Niseko Outdoor Center and then hit the slopes at Niseko Mountain Resort Grand Hirafu Ski Place. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: take in nature's colorful creations at Mishima's Shibazakura Garden and then tour the pleasant surroundings at Rusutsu Resort Ski.

Traveling by car from Sapporo to Kutchan-cho takes 2 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train. In April, plan for daily highs up to 9°C, and evening lows to 7°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 12th (Sun) to allow time to drive to Hakodate.

Hakodate

A gateway to the island, Hakodate has gained a reputation for its waterfront attractions, its proximity to some of the island's most popular natural sites, and its seafood.
Step out of Hakodate to go to Nanae-cho and see Hakodate Nanae Snow Park, which is approximately 52 minutes away. There's still lots to do: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mount Hakodate, steep yourself in history at Goryokaku Park, don't miss a visit to Hachimanzaka, and trot along with Dosanko Farm Hakodate.

Getting from Kutchan-cho to Hakodate by car takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: take a train; or do a combination of train and flight. In April, plan for daily highs up to 13°C, and evening lows to 5°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 15th (Wed) so you can travel to Tokyo.
