Shimoda

— 2 nights
On a trip to Shimoda, a small town nestled on the tip of the Izu peninsula, you can take advantage of the scenic sandy beaches and soak in the laid-back atmosphere.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Shimoda: Higashiizu-cho (Atagawa Tropical & Alligator Garden & Izu Animal Kingdom), Kawazu Nanadaru Waterfalls (in Kawazu-cho) and Izu (Koibito Misaki Cape, Toi Kinzan, &more). There's still lots to do: kick back and relax at Tsumekizaki, get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Izu Mito Sea Paradise, see the interesting displays at Izu Naranda no Sato Kawazu Heian Buddha Statue Pavilion, and walk around Izunokuni Panorama Park.

For maps, where to stay, and other tourist information, refer to the Shimoda online trip maker.

If you are flying in from United States, the closest major aiports are Tokyo Haneda International Airport, Mount Fuji Shizuoka Airport and Yokota Air Base. In January in Shimoda, expect temperatures between 50°F during the day and 44°F at night.
