Named for the Quetzal bird--one of Guatemala's national symbols--Quetzaltenango once included the territories controlled by K'iche' Mayans, a pre-Columbian tribe eventually supplanted by Spanish conquistadores.
Get some cultural insight at Catedral del Espiritu Santo and San Andres Xecul. Visiting Santa Maria Volcano and Fuentes Georginas will get you outdoors. Venture out of the city with trips to Iglesia San Andres Xecul (in Totonicapan), Solola Market (in Solola) and San Andres Xecul Church (in San Andres Xecul). Next up on the itinerary: take in the architecture and atmosphere at La Ermita de la Concepcion (La Conquistadora), shake up your sightseeing with a climbing tour, appreciate the history behind Teatro Municipal de Quetzaltenango, and see the interesting displays at Lxkik Maya Museum.

In March, daytime highs in Quetzaltenango are 73°F, while nighttime lows are 43°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 4th (Mon) early enough to travel back home.
