Gateway to the Lowveld

Nestled on the banks of the Crocodile River, Nelspruit provides visitors with a convenient base point boasting two airports and an enviable location on the road between Johannesburg and the Mozambican border.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Matsamo Cultural Village and Barberton Museum. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Malelane Gate, Kruger National Park and Safaris. Explore Nelspruit's surroundings by going to Elephant Whispers (in Hazyview) and Barberton Makhonjwa Geotrail (in Barberton).

For other places to visit, ratings, maps, and more tourist information, refer to the Nelspruit trip planner.

Johannesburg to Nelspruit is an approximately 2.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Johannesburg in September, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be a bit warmer in Nelspruit, with lows of 16°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 5th (Sun) early enough to fly back home.

Hike through the world's third-highest canyon, and the only green one in the world; explore the world's oldest cave; and witness the diverse wildlife in the many reserves of Mpumalanga. This "place where the sun rises," as the name means in local tongues, features stunning mountain scenery, lush valleys, and charming towns with refreshingly cool weather. Mpumalanga's attractions draw crowds of visitors from far and wide: follow the trails of the 19th-century gold rush in old gold-seeker's towns, rappel down a waterfall, or just take a dip in the pools below after a hike through the rainforests.
