The Oleander City

An old colonial city and a busy cruise ship port less than an hour's drive from Houston, Galveston sits on Galveston Island and serves as a popular vacation destination for both domestic and international travelers.
Galveston is known for historic sites, parks, and theme parks. Your plan includes some of its best attractions: wander the streets of The Strand, find something for the whole family at Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, steep yourself in history at Moody Mansion, and explore the galleries of 1892 Bishop's Palace.

To find other places to visit, traveler tips, reviews, and more tourist information, refer to the Galveston trip itinerary planning tool.

Austin to Galveston is an approximately 2.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. Plan for somewhat warmer nights when traveling from Austin in May since evenings lows in Galveston dip to 71°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 28th (Fri) so you can fly back home.

It's Island Time
Packed with vacation homes strung along a coastline of white sandy beaches, Galveston Island lies just 80 km (50 mi) southeast of Houston, so it attracts not only weekend revelers from the mainland, but also international tourists. At 43 km (27 mi) long and less than 5 km (3 mi) wide, the compact island is small enough to do most of your sightseeing on foot. Much of its area (with the exception of the town of Jamaica Beach) lies within the city limits of Galveston, a busy cruise ship port. If you plan to make Galveston your base on the island, visit at least one of the city's museums before heading to the beach.
