Arnhem

— 2 nights

Little Hague of the East

Arnhem is known mostly for its John Frost Bridge, which the British tried to secure during World War II. The operation was significant enough to be the subject of a movie, "A Bridge Too Far." Many who go to Arnhem do so for its historical museums, war monuments, museum of modern art, and the Burgers' zoo.
Get out of town with these interesting Arnhem side-trips: Canals area (in Utrecht) and Apeldoorn (Apenheul & Paleis Het Loo). The adventure continues: learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at Burgers' Zoo and Safaripark, contemplate the long history of Het Duivelshuis of Maarten van Rossumhuis uit 1518, explore the different monuments and memorials at Airborne Cemetery, and stroll around Park Sonsbeek.

Amsterdam to Arnhem is an approximately 1.5-hour car ride. You can also take a train. In May, daily temperatures in Arnhem can reach 20°C, while at night they dip to 8°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 24th (Mon) early enough to drive back home.
