Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Koyasan Reihokan Museum and Asuka-dera Temple. Nishinomiya Shrine and Yoshikien will appeal to history buffs. Change things up with these side-trips from Osaka: Tanzan Shrine (in Sakurai), Mitarai Valley (in Tenkawa-mura) and Tomogashima Island (in Wakayama). Step out of Takayama with an excursion to Osakacho Waterfalls in Gero--about 50 minutes away.
