The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Dotombori District. Discover out-of-the-way places like Pontocho District and Spas. Change things up with a short trip to Minami (Namba) in Namba (about 1h 10 min away). There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, step into the grandiose world of Osaka Castle, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kennin-ji Temple, and make a trip to Nijo Castle.

Valletta, Malta to Kyoto is an approximately 19.5-hour flight. The time zone difference when traveling from Valletta to Kyoto is 8 hours. Miyakojima

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Step out of the city life by going to Sunayama Beach and Aragusuku Beach. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Toguchi no Hama and Yabiji. There's still lots to do: see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour, head off the coast to Ikema-jima Island, kick back and relax at Nakanoshima Beach, and visit a coastal fixture at Higashi Hennazaki Lighthouse.

Iriomote-jima

Taketomicho Iriomote-Jima stands as the second largest island in Okinawa.
On the 25th (Sun), enjoy the sand and surf at Ida no Hama Beach, then skim along the rocks with a canyoning and rapelling tour, and then step off the mainland to explore Iriomote Island. Keep things going the next day: enjoy the sand and surf at Todomari Beach, enjoy the sand and surf at Hoshisuna Beach, then admire the sheer force of Pinaisara Falls, and finally glide peacefully along the water with some of the best stand-up paddleboarding in the area.

Ishigaki

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Visiting Kondoi Beach and Cape Hirakubozaki will get you outdoors. Your itinerary includes some good beach time at Yonehara Beach and Sunset Beach. The village of Zamami-son in the western Kerama Islands spans four of the islands in the group, one of which remains uninhabited.
Kick off your visit on the 31st (Sat): kick back and relax at Ama Beach, kick back and relax at Furuzamami Beach, kick back and relax at Kushibaru Beach, then head outdoors with Nishibama Beach, then head outdoors with Aka Beach, and finally head off the coast to Zamami Island.

Located on the coast in the middle of the island, Onna-son has become known for its beaches and seaside economy.
Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at AEONMALL OKINAWA RYCOM and Onna Station Nakayukui Market. Get outdoors at Scuba & Snorkeling and Nirai Beach. Change things up with these side-trips from Onna-son: Nakijin-son (Nakijin Castle Ruins & Kouri Beach), Busena Beach (in Nago) and Motobu-cho (Emerald Beach, Okichan Theater, &more). Shari-cho

Tourism in Shari-cho, a small town situated on Hokkaido's eastern tip, flourishes mainly because of its immediate proximity to the Shiretoko World Heritage Site.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Shiretoko Goko Lake and Mt. Rausu. Step out of the city life by going to Kamuiwakka Hot Waterfall and Shiretoko Peninsula. Get out of town with these interesting Shari-cho side-trips: Teshikaga-cho (Lake Mashu 3rd Observatory, Lake Mashu, &more) and Kiyosato-cho (Ippon no Michi & Kaminoko Pond). Spend the 7th (Sat) exploring nature at Shiretoko National Park. There's still lots to do: surround yourself with nature on a nature and wildlife tour, explore the striking landscape of Shiretoko Nature Center, head outdoors with Shiretoko Pass, and take a memorable drive along Road to Heaven.

Getting from Onna-son to Shari-cho by flight takes about 9 hours. Prepare for slightly colder weather when traveling from Onna-son in August: high temperatures in Shari-cho hover around 26°C and lows are around 20°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 9th (Mon) early enough to travel to Shakotan-cho.
