Osaka

Osaka ©
Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Get a sense of the local culture at Muroji Temple and Koyasan Danjo Garan. Visit Hase-dera Temple and Kongobu-ji Temple for their historical value. Change things up with these side-trips from Osaka: Koya-cho (Koyasan Daishi Kyokai & Koyasan Okunoin), Omiwa Shrine (in Sakurai) and Nara (Kofuku-ji Temple, Toshodaiji Temple, & more). And it doesn't end there: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Horyu-ji Temple, examine the collection at CUPNOODLES MUSEUM OSAKA IKEDA, contemplate the long history of Himeji Castle, and get to know the fascinating history of Hozenji Yokocho.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.

You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kyoto: Miho Museum (in Koka) and Uji (Mimurotoji Temple & Byodoin). There's still lots to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Eikando Zenrinji Temple, steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle, and stroll through Nanzen-ji Temple.
