The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Get out of town with these interesting Fukuoka side-trips: Nanzoin (in Sasaguri-machi), Shimonoseki (The Site of Dannoura Battlefield, Karato market, &more) and Dazaifu (Dazaifu Tenman-gu, Tenkai Inari Shrine, &more). The adventure continues: explore the historical opulence of Kumamoto Castle, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Raizan Sennyoji Daihioin, admire the masterpieces at Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, and admire the landmark architecture of Hakata Station.

If you are flying in from United Kingdom, the closest major aiport is Fukuoka Airport. In November, plan for daily highs up to 20°C, and evening lows to 11°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 13th (Sun) early enough to travel to Naoshima-cho.

Naoshima-cho

On a vacation in Naoshima-cho, a charming island town in the Seto Inland Sea, you can discover its numerous contemporary art museums, sculptures, installations, and galleries.
Explore Naoshima-cho's surroundings by going to Bizen (Takura Ushigamisha & Old Shizutani School), Fuji Park (in Wake-cho) and Teshima (Teshima Terraced Rice Field Project, Teshima Art Museum, &more). There's much more to do: explore the world behind art at Chichu Art Museum, don't miss a visit to Naoshima Pavillion, step off the mainland to explore Naoshima, and admire the striking features of Art House Project.

Getting from Fukuoka to Naoshima-cho by combination of flight and ferry takes about 4.5 hours. Other options: do a combination of train and ferry; or do a combination of bus and ferry. When traveling from Fukuoka in November, plan for a bit cooler days and about the same nights in Naoshima-cho: temperatures range from 17°C by day to 9°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 16th (Wed) so you can travel to Miyoshi.

Miyoshi

A relatively new city, Miyoshi encompasses six surrounding rural districts into one.
Venture out of the city with trips to Mt. Tsurugi (in Mima), Kotohira-cho (Kotohira-gu, Kompira Shrine Omotesando, &more) and Marugame Castle (in Marugame). Next up on the itinerary: take in the views from Iya Kazura Bridge, explore the activities along Oboke Koboke, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Zentsu-ji Temple, and admire the sheer force of Biwa Waterfall.

You can do a combination of ferry and train from Naoshima-cho to Miyoshi in 4 hours. Another option is to do a combination of ferry, bus, and train. In November, daytime highs in Miyoshi are 17°C, while nighttime lows are 9°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 19th (Sat) to allow enough time to fly to Tokyo.
