Miyakojima
A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Yabiji and Higashi Hennazaki Lighthouse. Take a break from the city and head to Toguchi no Hama and Scuba & Snorkeling. The adventure continues: enjoy the sand and surf at Aragusuku Beach, make a trip to East Henna Cape, snap pictures at Ikema Ohashi Bridge, and go for a walk through Imugya Marine Garden.

Taketomicho Iriomote-Jima stands as the second largest island in Okinawa.
Take a break from the city and head to Ida no Hama Beach and Kayaking & Canoeing. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Canyoning & Rappelling Tours and Barasu Island. There's still lots to do: admire the sheer force of Pinaisara Falls and step off the mainland to explore Iriomote Island.

Getting from Miyakojima to Iriomote-jima by ferry takes about 4 hours. In October in Iriomote-jima, expect temperatures between 34°C during the day and 28°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Fri) to allow enough time to ride a ferry to Ishigaki.

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Stand-Up Paddleboarding and Kondoi Beach. Get outdoors at Yonehara Beach and Nakamoto Beach. Step out of Ishigaki with an excursion to Iko Pier in Kuro-shima--about 1h 20 min away. There's still lots to do: get a new perspective on things with Boat Tours & Water Sports, take in the waterfront at Nishi Pier, visit a coastal fixture at Cape Hirakubozaki, and walk around Kabira Park.

The mountain town of Takachiho-cho remains a place of great importance to Japan's spiritual and natural heritage, and the point where these two things intersect.
Step off the beaten path and head to Amano Iwato Shrine and Daikanbo. Takachiho Shrine and Oka Castle Ruins will appeal to history buffs. Change things up with these side-trips from Takachiho-cho: Onsen Resorts (in Minamioguni-machi) and Kusasenri (in Aso). The adventure continues: go for a walk through Amano Yasugawara, explore the stunning scenery at Takachiho Gorge, and get impressive views of Mt. Aso.

You can fly from Ishigaki to Takachiho-cho in 7 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and bus. In October, Takachiho-cho is little chillier than Ishigaki - with highs of 28°C and lows of 17°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 11th (Fri) early enough to travel to Nachikatsura-cho.

Traveling from Takachiho-cho in October, expect somewhat warmer with lows of 22°C in Nachikatsura-cho. Finish your sightseeing early on the 13th (Sun) so you can drive to Takayama.
