Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Tokyo National Museum and Senso-ji Temple. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Asakusa and Meguro River. When in Tokyo, make a side trip to see Mt. Takao in Hachioji, approximately 1h 10 min away. The adventure continues: take a stroll through Odaiba, examine the collection at Samurai Museum, explore the world behind art at National Museum of Western Art, and take in nature's colorful creations at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.

Sydney, Australia to Tokyo is an approximately 12.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train. The time zone changes from Australian Eastern Standard Time (New South Wales) to Japan Standard Time, which is usually a -1 hour difference. Traveling from Sydney in May, things will get somewhat warmer in Tokyo: highs are around 28°C and lows about 19°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 5th (Sun) so you can travel to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Kaizu Osaki and Wakasa History Museum. Get a sense of the local culture at Kinkaku-ji and Kyoto Railway Museum. Explore Kyoto's surroundings by going to Otomegaike Pond (in Takashima) and Miho Museum (in Koka). There's much more to do: explore the activities along Lake Biwa, see the interesting displays at Kyoto Samurai & Ninja Museum, steep yourself in history at Mikage Shrine, and look for gifts at Ajari Mochi Hompo Mangetsu.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and bus; or drive. Expect a daytime high around 29°C in May, and nighttime lows around 17°C. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 8th (Wed) to allow enough time to travel to Tennoji.
