The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Get outdoors at Nokonoshima Island and Kanmon Kaikyo. Takachiho-cho

The mountain town of Takachiho-cho remains a place of great importance to Japan's spiritual and natural heritage, and the point where these two things intersect.
Step off the beaten path and head to Manai Falls and Tsujun Bridge. Get outdoors at Kusasenrigahama and Daikanbo Lookout. Go for a jaunt from Takachiho-cho to Minamiaso-mura to see Shirakawa Springs about 48 minutes away. There's lots more to do: go for a walk through Amano Yasugawara, explore the stunning scenery at Takachiho Gorge, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Takachiho Shrine, and contemplate the geological forces at Mt. Miyazaki

Getting from Miyazaki to Ibusuki by car takes about 3 hours. Other options: take a train; or take a bus. In October, daily temperatures in Ibusuki can reach 26°C, while at night they dip to 23°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 11th (Fri) to allow enough time to ride a ferry to Yakushima-cho.

Yakushima-cho

A popular destination for Japanese tourists, Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho is a true paradise for nature lovers, with over 1,900 species and subspecies of plants.

Finish your sightseeing early on the 15th (Tue) so you can travel to Amami.

Amami
