Walkable, small, and aesthetically charming, Kobe has served as Japan's first and premier international trading outpost since opening to trade with China in the mid-19th century.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Akashi Kaikyo National Government Park and Nunobiki Falls (Nunobiki-No-Taki). Venture out of the city with trips to Nishinomiya (Kabutoyama Shinrin Park, Koshien History Museum, &more), Itami (Itami City Museum of Insects, Aramaki Rose Garden, &more) and Awaji (Kiseki no Hoshi Botanical Museum, Nojima Fault Preservation Museum, &more). There's lots more to do: make a trip to Himeji Castle, see the interesting displays at Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum, take in nature's colorful creations at Koko-en, and walk around Maiko Park.
