Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.
Get a sense of the local culture at South African National Museum of Military History and Satyagraha House. Step out of the city life by going to Safaris and Croc City Crocodile and Reptile Park. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Johannesburg: Wonder Caves (in Krugersdorp) and Liliesleaf (in Rivonia). And it doesn't end there: try to win big at Montecasino, laugh and play at Gold Reef City, examine the collection at Lindfield Victorian House Museum, and get curious at Sci-Bono Discovery Centre.
