The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Dazaifu Tenman-gu and Komyozen-ji Temple are good opportunities to explore the local culture. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Fukuoka: Sasaguri-machi (Nanzoin & Komenoyama Obsevatory), Dazaifu (Kamado Shrine, Kyushu National Museum, &more) and Ikazuchi Shrine (in Itoshima).
