On the Garonne River, Toulouse is on the site of an ancient Roman settlement, and even today, many of the smaller streets follow their Roman counterparts, while many of the red brick buildings are built in a pseudo-Roman style.
Step off the beaten path and head to Cathedrale Sainte-Cecile and Grotte de Massabielle. Eglise Saint-Nazaire and Cloitre de la Collegiale Saint Salvy will appeal to history buffs. Change things up with these side-trips from Toulouse: Carcassonne Center (Cathar Castles & Chateau Comtal), O'Vineyards (in Villemoustaussou) and Albi (Musee Toulouse-Lautrec, Palais de la Berbie, &more).
