The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Fukuoka: Dazaifu Tenman-gu (in Dazaifu), Komenoyama Obsevatory (in Sasaguri-machi) and Karato market (in Shimonoseki). There's lots more to do: tour the pleasant surroundings at Ohori Park, browse the different shops at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kushida Shrine, and make a trip to Hakata Station.
