Known as the site of Napoleon's defeat, Waterloo tops the itinerary of any serious history buff exploring the Walloon Brabant province, located in the very heart of Belgium.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at St Symphorien Military Cemetery and Domaine Saint Roch. You'll explore and learn at Hospital Notre Dame de la Rose Museum and Espace Arthur Masson. Venture out of the city with trips to Enghien (Huis Jonathas, Église Saint-Nicolas, & more), le chateau medieval de Corroy le chareau (in Gembloux) and Abbaye d'Aulne (in Thuin). There's still lots to do: step into the grandiose world of Gaasbeek Castle, see the interesting displays at Mahymobiles, take an in-depth tour of The Wellington Museum, and pause for some serene contemplation at St-Martin's Basilica.

If you are flying in from United States, the closest major airports are Brussels Airport, Brussels South Charleroi Airport, Antwerp International Airport (Deurne) and Liège Airport. Expect a daytime high around 57°F in October, and nighttime lows around 45°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 11th (Mon) early enough to go by car to Liege.

Although decidedly industrial on the outskirts, Liege also boasts impressive architecture.
Start off your visit on the 12th (Tue): see the interesting displays at Musee Tchantches (Tchantches Museum), stroll the grounds of Ardennes American Cemetery, then take an in-depth tour of Prehistomuseum, then get engrossed in the history at Musee de la Vie Wallonne, and finally pick up a one of a kind souvenir at Walesa Antique Decoration By Aurore Morisse. Keep things going the next day: stroll the grounds of German War Cemetery, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Collegiale Saint-Denis, then admire the masterpieces at Tresor de Liege, and finally get to know the fascinating history of Rue Roture.
