Capital of the Inca Empire for three centuries, World Heritage-listed Cusco is now a major tourist destination, drawing nearly 2 million annual tourists with its well-preserved colonial architecture and proximity to Machu Picchu.
Step out of Cusco with an excursion to Pisac in Pisac--about 52 minutes away. Next up on the itinerary: steep yourself in history at Sacsayhuaman, admire the masterpieces at Museo de Arte Precolombino, delve into the distant past at Tambomachay, and admire the striking features of Centro Historico De Cusco.

New York City, USA to Cusco is an approximately 13.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of bus and flight; or do a combination of train and flight. Traveling from New York City in January, things will get much hotter in Cusco: highs are around 67°F and lows about 46°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 6th (Mon) early enough to travel to Machu Picchu.

Hugging the western tip of Lake Titicaca, Puno serves as a melting pot of indigenous and imported cultures, and makes a great base for explorations around the region.
Step out of Puno to go to Juliaca and see Iglesia Matriz de Santa Catalina, which is approximately 1 hour away. There's much more to do: head off the coast to Taquile Island, explore the ancient world of Sillustani, get great views at Mirador Ing. Eduardo Sanchez, and steep yourself in history at Arco Deustua.
