A modern, bustling city known for its beer brewery, Sapporo attracts millions of visitors with its Snow Festival, during which elaborate ice and snow sculptures are exhibited all over town.
Change things up with a short trip to Otaru Canal in Otaru (about 46 minutes away). There's still lots to do: walk around Odori Park, trek along Maruyama Hachijuhakksho Hiking Course, take some stellar pictures from Mt. Moiwa, and fly down the slopes at Mt. Okura Observatory.

Fly from Tokyo to Sapporo in 4 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train, taxi, and flight; or do a combination of flight and train. Expect colder weather when traveling from Tokyo in January: highs in Sapporo hover around -3°C, while lows dip to -6°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 31st (Fri) so you can travel to Kanazawa.

Traveling from Sapporo in January, things will get somewhat warmer in Kanazawa: highs are around 7°C and lows about 0°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 3rd (Mon) so you can go by car to Nagoya.
