Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Arcibasilica di San Giovanni in Laterano and Parco Archeologico di Ostia Antica. Museum-lovers will get to explore Vatican Museums and Galleria Borghese. There's still lots to do: explore the ancient world of Colosseum, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Santa Maria in Trastevere, ponder the design of Trevi Fountain, and take a stroll through Trastevere.

Getting from Paris to Rome by flight takes about 5.5 hours. Other options: do a combination of flight and train; or drive. In June, Rome is somewhat warmer than Paris - with highs of 34°C and lows of 21°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 14th (Fri) so you can travel to Athens.
