The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
You'll enjoy a bit of beach vacationing at Playa Blanca and Playa Puntilla. Sanctuary of Saint Peter Claver and Castillo de Salgar are good opportunities to explore the local culture. When in Cartagena, make a side trip to see Aviario Nacional de Colombia in Isla Baru, approximately Isla Baru away. There's still lots to do: visit Barrio Getsemani, don't miss a visit to Plaza de La Trinidad, see the interesting displays at Casa Museo Rafael Nunez, and admire the landmark architecture of Cathedral Basilica of St. Catherine of Alexandria.
