The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Do your shopping at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center and Osakana Tengoku. Get outdoors at Tsutsukihama Beach and Ohama Beach. Change things up with these side-trips from Fukuoka: Karatsu (Nijino Matsubara & Hado Misaki), Dazaifu (Dazaifu Tenman-gu, Kyushu National Museum, &more) and Itoshima (Shito Shrine, Keya Beach, &more).
