Durango

Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Durango: Pagosa Springs (Wolf Creek Ski Resort & Spas). There's still lots to do: hit the slopes at The Snowbike Experience, stroll around Rotary Park, view the masterpieces at Earthen Vessel Gallery, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Purgatory Resort.

Ouray is a Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and the most populous city of Ouray County, Colorado, United States. Get out of town with these interesting Ouray side-trips: Telluride (Cornet Creek Falls, Bear Creek Falls, &more) and Silverton (Kendall Mountain & Silverton Powdercats). There's still lots to do: walk around Ouray Ice Park, examine the collection at Ouray Alchemist Museum, get engrossed in the history at Ridgway Visitors Center and Railroad Museum, and hike along Cascade Falls Park.

Drive from Durango to Ouray in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of shuttle and taxi; or take a shuttle. Traveling from Durango in January, plan for a bit warmer nights in Ouray, with lows around 18°F. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 10th (Sun) to allow enough time to drive to Grand Junction.
