Main city on Chile's Chiloe Island, Castro represents one of the country's oldest inhabited settlements, making its fortune as both a tourist center and transportation hub.
Step out of Castro to go to Dalcahue and see Cascadas de Tocoihue, which is approximately 1 hour away. There's still lots to do: admire the striking features of Church of San Francisco, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Iglesia Nuestra Senora del Rosario, step off the mainland to explore Lemuy Island, and explore the striking landscape of Chiloe National Park.

Getting from Puerto Varas to Castro by bus takes about 3 hours. Expect a daytime high around 22°C in January, and nighttime lows around 10°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 24th (Fri) early enough to catcht the bus to Ancud.

A city of 40,000 people, Ancud was the capital of Chiloe Archipelago until it was superseded by the city of Castro in 1982.
Go for a jaunt from Ancud to Quemchi to see Isla Aucar about 58 minutes away. There's lots more to do: examine the collection at Museo Regional de Ancud, visit a coastal fixture at Faro Corona en Chiloe, head outdoors with Pinguineras, and don't miss a visit to Plaza de Armas de Ancud.
