A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Take a break from the city and head to Scuba & Snorkeling and Safaris. You'll enjoy a bit of beach vacationing at Four Mile Beach and Thornton Beach. Get out of town with these interesting Cairns side-trips: Daintree Discovery Centre (in Cow Bay), Hartley's Crocodile Adventures (in Wangetti) and Port Douglas (Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas, Opal Reef, &more). Spend the 26th (Fri) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. Spend the 30th (Tue) exploring nature at Daintree National Park. There's lots more to do: look for all kinds of wild species at Mossman Gorge Centre, enjoy some diversion at Esplanade Lagoon Pool, tour the pleasant surroundings at Esplanade Boardwalk, and kick back and relax at Palm Cove Beach.

Sydney to Cairns is an approximately 6.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a train. Expect a bit warmer temperatures when traveling from Sydney in July; daily highs in Cairns reach °C and lows reach °C. On the 14th (Wed), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel back home.
