The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Nabekanmuriyama Park and Iki City Ikikoku Museum. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Fukuoka: Daikozenji Temple (in Kiyama-cho), Arita Townscape (in Arita-cho) and Takeo no Okusu (in Takeo). There's still lots to do: stroll around Higashihirao Park, admire the landmark architecture of Hakoshima Residence, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kashii-gu, and examine the collection at OH Sadaharu Baseball Museum.

Traveling by train from Fukuoka to Kumamoto takes an hour. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. November in Kumamoto sees daily highs of 62°F and lows of 48°F at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 6th (Fri) early enough to catch the train to Kagoshima.

Naha

Naha, the capital of Okinawa, has deep roots: Stone Age relics have been found in the city, and through the Middle Ages it rose in importance in the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Kerama Islands and Scuba & Snorkeling. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Naha: Zamami-son (Nishibama Beach, Aka Beach, & more), Itoman (The Site of Itosu Daini Gekago & Okinawa Peace Memorial Park) and Tokashiki-jima Island (in Tokashiki-son). A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
