Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Colosseum and Duomo di Orvieto. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Centro Storico Associazione Centro Storico and Cupola di San Pietro. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Rome: Villa d'Este (in Tivoli), Monastero Di S.Benedetto (in Subiaco) and Chiesa di San Tommaso Apostolo (in Cerchiara). Sydney, Australia to Rome is an approximately 24-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight; or do a combination of bus and flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 9 hours traveling from Sydney to Rome. In May in Rome, expect temperatures between 28°C during the day and 17°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 12th (Tue) to allow enough time to take a train to Milan.

In many ways the most modern of Italian cities, Milan is a busy, elegant metropolis with an impressive list of grand palaces, fine churches, and important museums.
Start off your visit on the 12th (Tue): take in the spiritual surroundings of Duomo di Milano, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Cattedrale (Duomo) di Bergamo e Battistero, and then take in the spiritual surroundings of Cappella Colleoni. On the next day, take in the spiritual surroundings of Chiesa di San Cristoforo sul Naviglio, take an in-depth tour of Villa Necchi Campiglio, then admire the masterpieces at Bagatti Valsecchi Museum, then take in the architecture and atmosphere at Chiesa di Santa Maria presso San Satiro, and finally steep yourself in history at Chiesa di San Bernardino alle Ossa.

Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Step off the beaten path and head to Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari and Cannaregio. Your inner history buff will appreciate Doge's Palace and Chiesa di San Zaccaria. Take a train from Milan to Venice in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of flight and train. In May, daytime highs in Venice are 26°C, while nighttime lows are 15°C. You will have some time to spend on the 17th (Sun) before leaving for Barcelona.
