Take a break from the city and head to Mtirala National Park and Makhuntseti Waterwall. The capital of autonomous region Abkhazia, Sukhumi claims to be one of the oldest cities in the world. Ancient settlements from the Copper, Bronze, and Iron Ages stand around the city, as do burial grounds adorned with bronze axes, arrowheads, bracelets, and ceramics.
Kick off your visit on the 20th (Fri): take in the dramatic scenery at New Athos Waterfall, enjoy the sand and surf at Mokko Beach, then pause for some serene contemplation at Cathedral of the Annunciation, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Monastery of St. Ion of Zlatoust. Drive from Batumi to Sukhumi in 4 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of bus and taxi; or do a combination of ferry, bus, and train. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 1 hour traveling from Batumi to Sukhumi. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 21st (Sat) so you can go by car to Gagra.

Once popular as a health resort during Imperial Russian and Soviet times, Gagra today attracts a small contingent of international visitors seeking ideal summer weather and its seaside promenade, which hugs the coastline of the Black Sea.
Get outdoors at Gegskiy Waterfall and Hot Springs. Appreciate the collections at Pitsundsky State Historical and Architectural Reserve Vieliky Pitiunt and House-Museum Khetsuriani. Get out of town with these interesting Gagra side-trips: Gudaut'a (Pass Pyv & Miussera Temple), Pitsunda Beach (in Pitsunda) and Stalin's Villa (in Holodnaya Rechka (Bagripsh)). Getting from Sukhumi to Gagra by car takes about 1.5 hours. Other options: take a train. In December in Gagra, expect temperatures between 13°C during the day and 3°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 24th (Tue) so you can drive to Kutaisi.
