City of Yatai

The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Visiting Nijino Matsubara and Nokonoshima Island will get you outdoors. Your inner history buff will appreciate Yutoku Inari Shrine and The House of Kamio's Family. Get out of town with these interesting Fukuoka side-trips: Senjukan'non-Do (in Buzen), Kyushu National Museum (in Dazaifu) and Karatsu (Cherry Trees in Kagamiyama & Mt. Kagamiyama Inari Shrine). There's much more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Tochoji Temple, contemplate the long history of Old Moji Zeikan, explore the historical opulence of Mizuki Ruins, and make a trip to Remains of Old Samurai Residences.

Traveling by flight from Fukuoka to Ito takes 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or drive. When traveling from Fukuoka in August, plan for little chillier days in Ito, with highs around 84°F, while nights are about the same with lows around 79°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 14th (Sat) to allow time to take a train to Tokyo.

Getting from Ito to Tokyo by train takes about 1.5 hours. Other options: drive. In August, plan for daily highs up to 88°F, and evening lows to 76°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 22nd (Sun) early enough to catch the flight back home.
