On the Garonne River, Toulouse is on the site of an ancient Roman settlement, and even today, many of the smaller streets follow their Roman counterparts, while many of the red brick buildings are built in a pseudo-Roman style.
Museum-lovers will get to explore Chateau Fort of Lourdes and Musee Saint-Raymond. Cathar Castles and Couvent des Jacobins are good opportunities to explore the local culture. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Toulouse: Carcassonne Center (Cité de Carcassonne & Chateau Comtal), Chateau Foucaud et parc (in Gaillac) and Lourdes (Le Via Crucis/ Way of the Cross/ Chemin de Croix & Basilique de l’Immaculee Conception). Well-known for the beautiful views of its famous Promenade des Anglais waterfront, Nice is an ethnically-diverse coastal port city on the French Riviera and the fifth most populated city in France.
Museum-lovers will appreciate Musée Marc Chagall and Musee Matisse. Step off the beaten path and head to Monastère de Cimiez and Place Rossetti.
