Italian Riviera
Made up of five picturesque towns on the Ligurian coast, Cinque Terre is Italy's answer to the French Riviera. It's full of colorful villages tucked into the rugged coastline. In the last few centuries, tourism has transformed the sleepy towns into hives of activity and culture--but they still retain much of their original charm as historic fishing villages. Tour the ancient ruins and open-air street markets of Vernezza, or head to the rustic village of Riomaggiore, with its cascade of pastel buildings and cliffside paths leading to the local beach.
