Situated in a basin between two mountain ranges, Taipei appeals to tourists with its blend of Asian cultures, living side by side amidst Japanese-era mansions and Taoist temples.
Venture out of the city with trips to YehLiu Geopark (in Wanli), Qingan Temple (in Ren'ai District) and Taoyuan Valley (in Toucheng). There's still lots to do: make a trip to Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, examine the collection at National Palace Museum, shop like a local with Taipei 101, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Lungshan Temple.

If you are flying in from Taiwan, the closest major aiports are Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, Taipei Songshan Airport and Taichung International Airport / Ching Chuang Kang Air Base. In January, plan for daily highs up to 22°C, and evening lows to 16°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 20th (Mon) early enough to travel to Seoul.

One of east Asia's major cultural and financial centers, Seoul boasts five World Heritage Sites and a huge selection of museums, temples, shrines, palaces, parks, gardens, and glass-and-steel skyscrapers.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Seoul: Interactive Art Museum (in Gapyeong-gun), Nami Island (in Chuncheon) and DMZ Haemaru Village (in Paju). And it doesn't end there: contemplate the long history of Gyeongbokgung Palace, take in the spiritual surroundings of Jongmyo Shrine, make a trip to Bukchon Hanok Village, and visit Insadong.

Traveling by flight from Taipei to Seoul takes 5.5 hours. The time zone changes from Taipei Standard Time to Korean Standard Time, which is usually a 1 hour difference. Traveling from Taipei in January, things will get much colder in Seoul: highs are around 1°C and lows about -7°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 1st (Sat) to allow enough time to travel back home.
