Famous for its resemblance to the ancient settlements of Jerusalem and Cappadocia, Matera remains one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Parco della Murgia Materana and Church of Santa Maria de Idris. Get out of town with these interesting Matera side-trips: Volo dell'Angelo (in Castelmezzano) and Castello di Laurenzana (in Laurenzana).
