Pontarlier

— 21 nights
Pontarlier is a commune and one of the two sub-prefectures of the Doubs department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in eastern France near the Swiss border.HistoryPontarlier occupies the ancient Roman station of Ariolica, in Gallia and is placed in the Tables on the road from Urba (modern Orbe, Canton Vaud, Switzerland), to Vesontio (modern Besançon). You'll discover tucked-away gems like Eglise Saint-Just d'Arbois and Villa Palladienne. Visiting Les Gorges de la Langouette and Les Echelles de la mort will get you outdoors. Change things up with these side-trips from Pontarlier: Lac de Chalain (in Fontenu), Le Tuye du Papy Gaby (in Gilley) and Parc Polaire (in Chaux-Neuve). There's much more to do: pause for some serene contemplation at Eglise Saint-Benigne de Pontarlier, see the interesting displays at Musee des Machines a nourrir le monde, explore the ancient world of Castle Landskron, and explore the world behind art at Hotel-Dieu de Lons-le-Saunier.
